About the Gaiwan
If you’ve ever tried authentic gongfu tea, you’ll know that the very essence of gongfu tea lies in the flavor and mouthfeel of the brew. A well chosen gaiwan fully unlocks the natural aroma of tea leaves, and this model’s capacity and proportions are perfectly suited for those new to gongfu tea brewing.
It works beautifully for brewing all types of tea, and is especially ideal for varieties that demand high standards of aroma, freshness, and layered flavor in the liquor. Even complete beginners can easily master the brewing pace with it.
You can pick up one gaiwan paired with two teacups to experience the charm of gongfu tea for yourself. If you’re using a gaiwan for the first time, it may feel a little intimidating at first, but it’s really just a small bowl with a lid, and the lid doubles as a strainer.
How to Brew Gongfu Tea with a Gaiwan
- Preheat the gaiwan thoroughly with boiling water.
- Add 3 to 5g (0.11 to 0.18oz) of dry tea leaves, adjusted based on the tea variety.
- Pour boiling water gently along the inner wall of the gaiwan.
- Cover with the lid and steep for 5 to 30 seconds, with timing adjusted to your tea type.
- Shift the lid slightly to leave a narrow gap that blocks tea leaves, tilt the gaiwan to pour out the liquor, and enjoy.
The gaiwan features an outward turned rim for heat protection and a secure, comfortable grip.
