Tea Storage FAQs

The core of proper tea storage is to avoid the four key factors that degrade tea quality: moisture, direct light, high heat, and strong odors.

Store your tea in an environment with a consistent temperature of 10–25°C (50–77°F) and humidity below 60%. Keep it away from odor sources like kitchens, perfumes, and spices, and never expose it to direct sunlight. For teas that easily lose their delicate aroma, such as green tea, yellow tea, and lightly oxidized oolong, airtight storage is a must. We recommend portioning tea into small canisters to reduce how often you open the main container. For age worthy teas like pu-erh and aged white tea, create a moisture proof environment with slight breathability, as this supports optimal flavor development over time.

The key difference between tea canisters of various materials lies in their airtightness and breathability.

Metal canisters, including food grade stainless steel and traditional tin models, offer exceptional airtightness. They completely block out moisture, light, and external odors, making them ideal for green tea and yellow tea, which have extremely high requirements for freshness retention and oxidation prevention, as well as for herbal teas and flavored teas that easily absorb unwanted odors.

Ceramic canisters (including blue and white porcelain, enamel porcelain, and Ru kiln ware) have a dense, non porous structure, with excellent moisture proof, light blocking, and aroma locking performance. They have the widest versatility, working beautifully for nearly all tea types including black tea, oolong, and scented tea, and are especially perfect for teas that require long term freshness and aroma retention.

Yixing Zisha clay canisters have a natural, slightly porous structure that won’t suffocate the tea leaves. They are the best choice for pu-erh, aged white tea, and aged rock oolong — teas that require long term aging and flavor maturation.

Small portable ceramic canisters are perfect for portioning frequently consumed teas for daily on the go use.

The actual capacity of a tea canister varies based on the size, shape, and density of the loose leaf tea. Below are general reference values for standard loose leaf teas.

Small travel sized canisters (50–100ml / 1.7–3.4 fl oz): Hold 25–50g of loose leaf tea, ideal for on the go use and portioning sample sized servings.

Medium everyday home canisters (200–350ml / 6.8–11.8 fl oz): Hold 100–150g of loose leaf tea, perfect for storing frequently consumed daily teas.

Large bulk storage canisters (500ml / 16.9 fl oz and above): Hold 200–300g of loose leaf tea, designed for bulk tea stocking and long term storage. Some wide mouth models can fit an entire standard pu-erh tea cake.
